Bourgeois and Bondage
Breaking away from last season’s flower-petal prints and feminine silhouettes, this New York Fashion Week has gone somewhat S&M for Spring 2013, with leathers, harnesses, and ankle-cuffs dominating the catwalk.
BCBG Max Azria were amongst the first to show their hard- vs soft- chic look as models took to the glossy runway dressed in willowy blocks of black and white sheer, strapped in with a statement harness, which takes us back to Prabal Gurung’s Fall collection.
Jason Wu’s spring theme also took inspiration from the strong sexy woman image, and created body-conscious, provocative pieces, more subtly detailed with thin suspender straps. While over to the men, stand-out pieces at Duckie Brown included the casual draping of strappy harnesses over the models shoulders, making you wonder what exactly those guys have been up to?
Shades of Grey
From style icon Michelle Obama’s nail polish to the New York catwalks, jaded grey is the hot color of Spring 2013. With its soft and sensual tone, Prabal Gurung mixed grey dresses of trailing silk layers into their seductive collection, while Nicholas K embraced the hue body and soul, with head-to-toe combinations of grey draped jackets, silk jumpsuits, and tasseled dresses. Kimberly Ovitz, Rachel Comey, Richard Chai Love, and BCBG Max Azria were also amongst the grey parade, while designer of the moment Rebecca Minkoff incorporated shades of grey into her cool palette and peppy prints.
Brocade is Back
Every woman wants that classic wardrobe piece, and nothing says bold is beautiful quite like brocade. Baroque-inspired prints are fashionably loud says the catwalk this season, with the likes of Jill Stuart lighting up the runway with her romantic brocade dresses. But she’s not the only one, Helmut Lang dressed up a casual trouser-look with an orange-brocade biker-style jacket, or vica versa piecing a casual tee with some statement brocade shorts. Lang’s brocade palette came in hues of orange, grey, and blue. Suno’s collection also featured stunning brocade fabrics, using rich golds and silver, while over at Prabal Gurung sheened outfits took the form of interwoven silvers, midnight-blues, and more night hues on statement pieces.
